This class is powering at the moment with our numbers bursting through the roof.
Everyone loves Holly our Gym Supervisor and our instructor for Stay In Shape. The class is a low impact fitness session designed for our mature members or those rehabilitating from injury or illness. Holly leads the group through a variety of functional, practical and enjoyable exercises.
The group is very social and often enjoy a snack after class together.
Bingeing is a term that is sometimes used jokingly as a way of eating an excess of certain foods out of fun. But for some, the term is a dark reminder of a problem that tends to consume and completely run their lives. Even though the condition can affect any age group, research is showing that teens and binge eating is on the rise.
So how does this happen? In essence, it is often a response to a traumatic or life-altering event. Fuelled by depression, anxiety or any number of other emotions, the body retreats into itself and looks for consolation in the only area that it deems will not let it down: food.
Unlike friends, parents or teachers, these individuals feel that food is a constant that never criticizes or judges. People with this condition also feel that food does not inflict punishment. But that could not be further from the truth. Consuming large amounts of unneeded calories leads to becoming overweight, obesity and a host of other complications. As the person continues to gain weight, their emotions retreat and they turn to food for relief- thus continuing the cycle.
It is important for those around these individuals to be able to identify when teenagers are struggling with this affliction. There are tell-tale signs that something is definitely wrong. For instance, the individual may be putting on weight, but it appears that their eating habits have not changed. This is because they are consuming a majority of their food intake in private.
These people will often hide food in their rooms, lockers, cars or any other place where they can get quick access to it without anyone else being around. This gives them easy access to food whenever the mood strikes them- even between meals. Since the hidden foods cannot be refrigerated it leads to the type of food that can be stashed in a room or other secret locations. As a result, these foods are generally high in fat, carbs, and calories, which further complicates the issue.
If someone feels that there is a problem with teens and binge eating they should talk to them immediately. This is a serious condition and should never be left to speculation as it can evolve into much more serious concerns. With several million individuals in the Australia suffering from this condition it is something, unfortunately, that will not correct itself.
Keeping the teenager active and introducing them to a multitude of sport and recreational activities will assist in restoring balance to the young persons life.
We only have a few more weeks before the Playtime Christmas Party and break up as we have the big kids during school holidays.
The Christmas Party will be on Monday the 5th of December 2011 if everyone could bring a plate of food to share it would be appreciated. Bring your friends as well, everyone is welcome. Playtime will be held during the normal times of 9am - 12 o'clock.
Exercise contributes to the amount of fat loss you can experience. How hard you work out and how long your exercise periods are for can really influence the amount of calories you burn and the amount of kilos you lose. For instance if you investigate interval training on the internet you will find out that short bursts of high energy exercise are good for burning fat.
Long slow exercise like walking or jogging is also good for weight loss, but probably not at the same rate that you would release weight with interval training. There are even some interval training regimens that have you working out really hard for only 10 seconds and then resting for 10 seconds.
This kind of exercise can really get your heart pumping and astonishingly you will only need to do this for a couple of weeks to see real changes in your physique.
For sure, you will want to consult a medical professional before starting this kind of intense physical training. It is one thing to want to lose weight and quote another to work out so hard that you develop some other kind of physical issue. That is not the kind of change you need.

If you are saying to yourself, "I can't lose weight", then guess what? You can't lose weight! See, along with changing your diet and exercise habits comes the emotional side of losing weight. Losing weight is a process that takes time and dedication.
If you have a lot of belly fat you may know that when under stress the body produces a hormone called Cortisol. Cortisol increases fat stores around your mid-section putting you at risk for heart disease and diabetes.
Learn some techniques to decrease the stress in your life. Meditation is a good technique to use to decrease stress. Yoga is another good way. Actually, just getting some regular daily exercise will go a long way to decreasing your stress level.
Try to think more positively about your life and your weight loss. If you do then the extra pounds will be long gone in no time.
Getting enough good sleep is also a big part of losing weight. If you are on the "I can t lose weight" bandwagon then try getting an extra hour or two of sleep at night. The human body needs 7-9 hours of sleep per night and when you do not get it your metabolism starts to slow down and your body does not work the way it should. Those of us who work the night shift really have screwed up metabolisms. Working nights is very stressful on the human body. We were all meant to sleep at night not during the day.
OK, so, you have done all the things listed above and find you still cannot lose the weight. Let's investigate the situation a little further. Are you drinking enough water? If you answer that you drink enough fluids then my next question is, do you drink soft drink or other sweetened drinks? If you do you need to stop. Regular soft drink, diet soft drink and other sweetened drinks are called empty calories because they have no nutritional value. The only thing they do is add to your excess fat. Did you know that if you do nothing else but stop drinking sugary drinks you can lose approximately 20 kilos in a year, give or take a few kilos.
Wait a sec, diet drinks? Yup, diet soft drink is sweetened with artificial sweeteners and is basically poison. Diet soft drink actually tricks your body into staying fat. When you drink diet soft drink the body thinks it is getting something of value and when it realizes you were only kidding the brain signals the stomach that it is still hungry and you end up eating more.
Stick with the water and maybe some green tea. The green tea gives you an added benefit of antioxidants that are so important for your health and it tastes great, too.
So try to decrease the stress in your life, grab some regular exercise, get more sleep at night and give up the sugar drinks. This should help turn the, I can t lose weight, into Yes, I can lose weight.

The world is just too busy. And your life, well forget about it, thereís just no time in the day when you can manage to squeeze a little bit of exercise into your schedule. Someone is always calling and interrupting your exercise routine anyway. The emails are not going to answer themselves. The bills need to get paid and donít you really deserve to spend some quality time watching television. Thatís pretty harmless stuff, right? And itís your life anyway and what right does someone have to tell me how I should be eating or exercising or doing anything for that matter.
Any of those ideas sound familiar at all?
If they do not, count yourself lucky. Because thoughts like these seem to appear out of thin air just when you decide to start an exercise program to lose some weight. It is almost like there is a hidden force in their minds that jumps right out in front to prevent them from starting an exercise program.
Of course, exercise helps you lose weight. The amount of weight you are going to lose depends on the amount of exercise you do and the intensity. Now, if you eat more than you did before with the rationalization that since you are working out you can eat more, you are probably not going to lose any weight at all. But in general if you exercise more and eat less, some weight is going to vanish into thin air.
Starting a new physical workout schedule is the kind of thing that will really change the way you look and feel. You will also find that your entire mood will change. You feel better, you feel more alive and you will feel the kind of happiness that comes from knowing you are doing something good for yourself.
Increased energy, increased happiness and decreased weight; those sound like terrific reasons to start an exercise program as soon as you can. No reason to delay all those benefits and once you start you will never want to go back to the way you were.

Cardio Workouts For Weight Loss - Simple And Enjoyable
If you are interested in losing some of the extra kilos you have been carrying around then cardio workouts for weight loss are just what you need to help you achieve your goals. Let us be honest for a moment, shall we? Most people don't like to engage in exercise. However, the combination of regular exercise and healthy eating is the best way to lose weight. You should be aware that your cardio workouts need to be done on a consistent basis. Therefore, if you are able to find exercises you enjoy, you will have an easier time sticking with your weight loss plan.
That raises the question of what the best way is of making a workable weight loss and cardio workout plan that fits in with your lifestyle. Here are some things to consider as you develop your plan:
Boxercise
1. Time. I understand that you are very busy, but everybody is busy. Perhaps you feel that you don't even have a spare minute to spend on exercising. If so, then I have a question. How much time do you spend watching television or mindlessly surfing the internet? Would you be willing to give up 15 to 30 minutes a day, most days of the week, if it meant you would lose weight and feel better than ever before?
Les Mills RPM class
2. Ability. You are reading this, so I will assume you want to know about weight loss. In turn, it's probably a safe assumption that you are not in peak physical condition. When you first start doing cardio workouts, select exercises that are within your level of ability. It's okay to push yourself to some extent, but you don't want to injure yourself either. Be sure to check with your personal doctor before starting a new eating plan or exercise regimen. They will most likely be thrilled that you want to be healthier, but they can also alert you to any underlying medical problems you have, and how best to deal with them.
Stay in Shape 50+
3. Enjoyment. Generally speaking, exercise doesn't sound all that enjoyable to most people. They only think of it as work, but it doesn't have to be if you select activities that you enjoy. It stands to reason that the more you look forward to your exercise, the more likely you will be to stick with it. Here is a short list of some of the best exercises for cardio workouts for weight loss that we have at the Gold Coast PCYC.
Tennis
Zumba
Cardio Fit
Running
Walking
Boxercise
Les Mills Body Pump
Boxing
Elliptical trainers
Bicycling - Les Mills RPM
Stay in Shape 50+
You should now have a good idea of what type of exercises you will be doing and when you will do them, but that's only part of the picture. You also need to have an end goal in mind. If you don't, you won't know when you get there, and it will be easier to get discouraged when you don't see results right away.
Tennis is for all ages
Doing cardio workouts for weight loss is one of the best ways to take of extra pounds. Now that you have a better idea of how best to do it, it's up to you to follow through. You'll be glad you did and we are here to support you.

Cheerleading on the Gold Coast is a growing sport.
What do you think of when someone mentions Cheerleading? If your answer is Pom Poms, banners and cheers at a football or basketball game you would be correct. But also add manoeuvres, correct posture, music, strength, stamina, acrobatics, gymnastic moves and you have an enjoyable sport which is becoming more popular both recreationally and competitively.

Gold Coast PCYC would like to welcome our new Judo coach Doug Alderton who is replacing Matt Kinsler. Doug is pictured here demonstrating a throw and I've asked him to introduce himself below.
Doug: I started Judo over 23 years ago, after taking my sons to a local club in the UK, I was fascinated to watch and rapidly developed a wish to join in the fun my kids were having. I decided to look for and join an adult class, finding a love for the art, which has been infectious and very enjoyable ever since.
Originally training with the Tokushima Budo Council from a little known club in Warlingham, England, under Sensei Ken Williams, who is sadly no longer with us. I then enjoyed training with the BJA along with the likes of Sensei Tim Bass, David Oldfield and Jeff Reed who have been a great inspiration to me and have developed most of my knowledge to date, although always learning in Judo.
On moving to Australia to live, I was most fortunate to be able to train at the Samurai Judo club in Currumbin, under the JFA with Sensei Steve Potter who is totally dedicated to the art and has developed Judo over here in Australia for many years.
I am now proud to have been asked to volunteer at the PCYC Monaco Street, Broadbeach Waters, where I hope to instil the love and passion I have for Judo to others within the local community. I do hope any enquiries lead to a continuing increase of members in the popular art of Judo at the PCYC.
Gold Coast PCYC has introduced a new class - Bubs Ballet.
This class is for the 2 year old to 5 year old age group. It is the basics of all dance which requires not only technique efficiency but also strength, beauty, poise, stamina, line and agility. Our Instructor Adrianna (pictured below) is a talented entertainer with a fitness background as a personal trainer. She currently runs structured tiny tots classes and wants to bring that same energy to Bubs Ballet.
The new class will start on the 9th of September 2011 and be held on Friday's at 10.30am. Tell your friends and mention this blog for your first session free.
Alex Hughes, 15 years old has been fencing for 10 years. Last year in September Alex made the under 17 Australian Fencing Team, since then she has trained in Europe and represented Australia in competitions in Italy, Hungary, Thailand, Jordan and New Zealand. Alex has achieved 2nd place in the teams event at the Asian under17 championships, the first medal Australia has won in this event and last month she brought home a gold medal and a 5th from the Australian under 15/17 championships. Alex is the new Australian under15 champion and the second highest in the U17 event (competitors 2-4 Singaporeans).
We are proud to have Alex and her fellow fencers training at the Gold Coast PCYC.
